Where can i adopt a dog in my area?

I live in the bronx, new york (zipcode 10469) and i heard you can adopt dogs for free, just pay a small adoption fee, where can i find those places? i checked and most want like a couple hundred dollars, but id be willing to spend about 100-150 for a cool dog. i dont mind it being mixed either. i know pure breeds are more expensive though.
